The need was simple but crucial: a robust cover for the swimming pool. They wanted the kids to have their swimming time during the scorching summer noon and even when the monsoon hits. Of course, no construction project is ever perfectly smooth. Right as we were marking out the locations for the main foundation columns, we hit a snag. The original site blueprints hadn't accounted for a large, old drainage line running exactly where one of our critical structural support points needed to be.
We couldn't compromise the overall design symmetry—that would have ruined the look and the structural integrity of the roof—and digging up the pipe was a huge liability and would have wasted precious time. Akshat ji had given us a very strict deadline to ensure the kids could use the pool right when summer vacation started.
Our solution was a clever bit of engineering. Instead of using a standard, wide-span pad footing directly over the spot, our design team quickly fabricated a robust, cantilevered steel sub-base. This allowed us to transfer the necessary load from the main column onto two smaller, safe foundations that were strategically placed on either side of the buried drainage line. Shailendra ji was initially hesitant, but once he saw our detailed structural calculations and how cleanly it solved the issue without changing the elegant design, he gave us the immediate go-ahead.
