It’s funny how things come full circle in this business. A while back, we pitched for a rooftop canopy at Babylon Capital here in Raipur. We lost that one. The client went with a cheaper vendor from Indore because of budget, and we moved on. But as they say, you get what you pay for. The quality of that work didn't hold up, so when it came time for the prestigious Babylon International Hotel in Vishal Nagar to do something big, the owners actually reached out to us on the recommendation of the Capital team. It’s a proud moment when a former "no" turns into a "you’re the only ones we trust."
The Vision: A Restaurant with an Edge
Mr. Baldev Khanuja and his brother wanted to turn an empty ground area into a lavish, high-end sitting area for their restaurant. They brought in Miss Nilofar, an architect from Mumbai, and she was very clear: "I don’t want anything conventional."
We took that to heart. Instead of a simple shed, we designed a layered system with perlins where the fabric was locked in place. It looked stunning. One piece of advice we gave that really saved the day was about the fabric. They were thinking opaque, but I pushed for translucent. Why? Because you get that beautiful natural light all day long without needing to turn on a single bulb. It completely changed the ambiance.
Real Engineering for Real Challenges
The project wasn't just about looks. Mr. Khanuja was very thorough—he wanted to know everything. How many engineers? We put 7-8 guys on it. How long? We promised two weeks. The lifespan? We gave him the honest truth: 30 years for the steel and over 15 for the fabric.
We used the best stuff available—Apollo ISI marked heavy-duty mild steel and 900 GSM fabric (from top names like Serge Ferrari or Sioen) with a PVDF coating. This coating is key because it blocks UV rays and lets you clean the whole thing with just a pressure wash. When he asked about running AC inside, we figured out how to integrate glass walls while keeping the aesthetic perfect.
It wasn't all smooth sailing, though. Working around the existing trees on the premises was tricky, and Raipur’s heavy winds and occasional electricity hiccups kept us on our toes. Because the canopy was bigger than a standard vehicle parking tensile shade, we had to use high-gauge steel pipes to make sure it was rock-solid.
